GCM Career Consultant update 3/10/10

This is Mike’s second NPR.  In October 2009, he accepted a contract position with DPS, but had identified early on Baxa as a preferred company.  Through his personal network he had facilitated an introduction to the President of Baxa and interviewed with the leadership team during the summer.  However, they were not yet ready to bring him on board.  When he accepted the contract position, he informed his network, which generated a new conversation with the Baxa people.  They resumed their conversation and the Baxa leadership decided they needed Mike’s talents and created a new position for him.  We worked with him in negotiating a more attractive package.

Mike recently accepted a position as a Data Migration Engineer at Safire Technologies.  His projects will specifically be working on contracts with Charles Schwab.  He is transitioning from a position as a Systems Analyst.  He will enjoy a 10% increase in salary in his current position.

Mike was looking for an IT role in a company while he and his fiancée set up a photography business.  He had a number of small contracts between his last job and his current offer.

GCM update 10/23/09

Mike accepteda position with the DPS.  This is a contract position and funded by a grant received by DPS.  Mike is very excited as he will have the opportunity to do some ground breaking work with a great team.  Mike and the hiring manager are already discussing how he can be brought into the organization on a full-time permanent basis.  We worked with Mike on interview and negotiation strategy with both TEG and DPS.  He was a little disconcerted about the slow decision process on DPS’ part and was appreciative of our coaching regarding how to keep connected to the hiring manager.  We will continue to work with Mike as this is not yet a full time position and he wants to continue to build consulting projects.  Transitioning out of the tourism/hospitality industry Mike will make an annualized salary just under $90k.

Don was a returning client who had initially been recruited as a partner in a financial management consulting firm.  After about a year and a half, he realized he really wanted to have more of a hands on role with a small technology company.  He saw his niche as a CFO.  The initial discussions with Verocity focused on his financial management expertise.  However, because of the company’s rapid growth, their more immediate need was someone who could take the operations helm and ensure the appropriate systems were in place to sustain their growth.  Don was able to convince the CEO and principal investor that he could meet their needs.

George’s experience as a long-time entrepreneur, coupled with his age (in his sixties), were issues that needed to be overcome as he sought employment in a corporate setting.  Moreover, George was very discerning about the type of corporate environment he wanted.  He wanted to be in a place that appreciated his leadership capabilities and his experience.  MMG is an internet startup firm with a very creative and innovative staff.  George is very excited to find this group and about the opportunity to contribute his entrepreneurial experience to a new endeavor.  We worked with George on developing documents and interview responses that built on his strengths and mitigated his liabilities.  We also worked with him to negotiate his contract with MMG.

“The two elements of GCM that were most valuable were:

The video interview:  it was really interesting to see myself as others see me . . . not always consistent with how we think we are coming across

My regular meetings with Scott:  he provided me guidance, direction, motivation, counsel and sanity checks” – Jeanette M.
